42: Team members were requested to search a river bank in the Padiham area for a male who had been seen to jump into the water from a bridge, during the early hours of the morning.
The man had allegedly been drinking in town centre pubs for several hours. Whilst crossing the bridge on Park Road, Padiham, he was seen to undress to his underclothes and jump into the swollen and fast-flowing River Calder on the upstream side. He was then seen being swept under the bridge, downstream and in the centre of the river.
The Fire and Rescue Swiftwater Rescue team had attended and made a limited search in darkness as far as Altham. The team was paged and, after briefing, tasked with searching the river banks as far as Hyndburn Brook, supported by the swiftwater team who were waterborne and providing rescue cover further downstream. ON99 also searched from the confluence with the River Ribble to Padiham, but nothing was found.
