Ambulance Assist

May 31, 2010 @ 7:49 PM

83: A 14 year old girl was reported to have fallen from the Healey Dell viaduct.

NWAS was also en route. The girl appeared to have climbed over the safety railing and then lost her footing, falling 90 feet onto the bank next to the river, sustaining severe injuries.

NWAS paramedics stabilised the casualty who was then put onto our Bell stretcher and carried by fire, ambulance and team personnel, across the weir and up the steep valley side to a waiting ambulance. She was then transferred to a nearby school playing field for onward transportation to Manchester Royal Infirmary by police helicopter.

Consideration was given to a rope system to bring the casualty to the ambulance and to a Sea King helicopter to winch directly from the river bank. A Sea King would take at least an hour to arrive and was discounted due to the urgent nature of the evacuation. The rope system was overruled in favour of a simple carry out as this was felt to be the speediest method.

Team members stood down at 22.13hrs.

Man hours: 50.50
