Team raises £438.19 thanks to Tesco, Haslingden

Team members spent the day at Tesco Haslingden on Saturday 18 April, to raise awareness of their role in the community.

Managers at the Tesco store had kindly allowed the team to set up a display stand inside the store, with room for a team vehicle at the front entrance.

Team members, accompanied by one of our trainee search dogs, spent the day chatting to members of the public about the valuable community service we provide.

The aim was to help raise public awareness of the work mountain rescue teams undertake, not only helping the injured and unwell in the hills and moorland, but also assisting the police in searching for missing persons, and the ambulance service in cases of remote or difficult access.

Colette Butler, Community Champion for Tesco, said, 'This is a Valley organisation, so we decided to raise funds for them.'

Mountain rescue teams in England and Wales do not receive any government funding but rely on the generosity of the public through donations and legacies, as well as various fundraising events throughout the year, to raise all the necessary funds to keep going. Team members are all volunteers, giving their time free of charge to help those in need.

A total of £438.19 was raised on the day, through collection boxes and the sale of promotional merchandise. The money will go towards helping set up the Rossendale Way in a Day events, which will run on Saturday 4 July. The proceeds from the two walks – 42 miles and 25 miles respectively – represent a considerable portion of the team's annual income.

Many thanks to Tesco – and especially Colette – for their support on the day.
